First Year Students (Frosh)

WELCOME TO PORTER ADVISING FOR NEW FROSH!

Welcome to Porter College Academic Advising. This website is designed to help orient new first-time college students to what we think are the most important advising topics in the first year. This is a starting point in your educational journey.

Our primary goals for this first year are to help you:

  • get oriented to UCSC and Porter College: specifically, the college system and our role as your advisers
  • start thinking about qualifying for your intended major, and get the classes you need to progress toward your degree
  • become aware of the many academic support resources available to you, and to feel comfortable using them
  • develop (begin thinking about) and map your long-term academic goals

We encourage each one of you to come and meet with us at some point this year. We are here to support you.

Tips for Success

Many students begin at UCSC with a strong idea of what they want to major in. Of these students, some will stick to the plan, and others will discover new educational goals.

If you are undecided, or looking to confirm your major interests, there are many resources available to you at UCSC.

We recommend that you start with an assessment based on your strengths, interests, and values, like the Career Center's online FOCUS program.  Also revew How to Choose a Major for more ideas.

Once you've begun the assessment process, you can meet with a Porter College, Career Center or major adviser to begin exploring your options at UCSC.

If you know what you want to do, the next step is to become aware of your intended major's requirements. As you review areas of interest or majors, seek information about:

  • How to qualify for the major
  • How to declare the major
  • How to complete the degree requirements for your major

If you have questions about finding and choosing a major, contact a Porter Adviser and review How to choose a major. We're here to help!
