To experience and appreciate the creative process in ourselves, in our cultures, and in cultures of those vastly different
from ourselves: this is the mission of Porter College. Provost David Evan Jones
Our theme, "Arts in a Multicultural Society," points to
our emphasis on both scholarly and creative endeavors. Through our
academic courses and the numerous co-curricular events sponsored by
Porter, students experience diverse exhibitions and performances and
learn about the cultures in which they are created, performed, interpreted.
In Porter's art galleries and informal performance venues, Porter
students may actively develop their own roles as musicians, composers,
actors, playwrights, dancers, painters, film makers, media artists...
Historically, about half of all Porter students graduate with a major
in one of the arts. The other half consists of students representing
all of the sciences, humanities, and engineering who have also found
compelling co-curricular reasons for choosing Porter College.
This diversity of academic interest provides the basis for wide-ranging
collaboration and debate and for the exceptional appreciation of individual
differences that is a hallmark of Porter. Regardless of their
intended major, all students who share an interest in the arts and
in the diverse cultures from which they emerge are encouraged to join
the Porter College community.
