Recital Hall, Music Center
Undang Sumarna has taught and produced gamelan, dance, and theatre of West Java at UC Santa Cruz since in 1975-76. His students have ranged from the noted composer Lou Harrison, to steller ethnomusicologists, linguists, political scientists, and new students just out of high school.
The concert is a journey through the history of performing arts of the region of Sunda (West Java) from 1930-present by revisiting Sumarna's family heritage. You will be exposed to music and dance of Indonesian master artists, featuring American artists Pamela Aguiniga, Bethine Gilbert, Margo Lederer with whom Sumarna has often collaborated in the U.S. We also welcome leading exponents of Sundanese classical dance who will perform at UC Santa Cruz for the first time, including Cis Garcia, Amanda Ramadhani, and Aninda Puspa Rahmadianti).
