Sophomore Advising
Welcome to your second year at Porter College. Sophomore year is an exciting time for many students. As your college advisers, we hope to see you through the transition to focusing on your major and potentially broadening your horizons with one or more of the following:
- Internships
- Student Organizations
- Education abroad
- Undergraduate research
- UCDC - enjoy an internship or academic quarter in Washington D.C.
- Intercampus Visitor Program - attend a sister UC for a quarter
- Domestic Exchange Programs - attend U of New Mexico or U of New Hampshire
Many students feel pressure about choosing a major at the beginning of the second year. We hope you channel potentially stressful energy into productive activity! Now is the time to:
- Qualify for your major by completing lower-division prerequisite courses and/or meeting any GPA requirements
- Declare your major by following your major program's declaration process (start early!)
- Meet with faculty in your major to start considering next steps after graduation (graduate school? research? career?)
- Learn about honors opportunities on campus and beyond
Once you've declared your major and made contacts within your major program, you may find that you meet less with us, and more with your major adviser and major faculty. That's making excellent progress! However, don't forget that we are still your first resource if you need to:
- Have questions about your degree requirements or how to read your Academic Advisement Report.
- Withdraw from a class or the university
- Take a leave of absence
- Appeal for an enrollment correction
- Add more than 22 credits (or more than 19 if you do not have a 3.0 GPA)
- Discuss your academic standing if you are in academic trouble
- Review your degree progress by checking your Academic Advisement Report in your Student Center.
