Resources to Help You Choose a Major

Are you undecided as to your major/s?

If you are still exploring your options, review the list of majors available at UC Santa Cruz, and utilize the following resources to help clarify and map your goals. Select as many majors as you think you are interested in studying and take steps to help you make a decision.

Explore:

  • schedule an advising appointment with a major adviser for a specific major or
  • schedule a meeting with a career adviser for career information.
  • take the free FOCUS assessment to learn about your academic skills or
  • take introductory courses for different disciplines.

Prepare:

Activate your plan:

  • Review the major qualifications online utilizing the major department’s website or General Catalog Link With Departments.
  • Map out a strategy to plan to declare a major by your Sophomore year.
  • When you are ready to declare your major, follow the guideline for your specific major.
  • Learn about honors opportunities on campus and beyond

Does your proposed major/s require a GPA to qualify for the major?

Do you know how to calculate your GPA?
Utilize the GPA calculator to calculate a cumulative or "what if" GPAs.
Just follow the directions and open your MyUCSC portal and navigate to "Student Advising Summary" from your Student Center.  From your Student Center, select the i-button or Student Advising Summary and select the "UCSC Courses" tab if you want to calculate your cumulative GPA with current courses. Consult with your college adviser if you need assistance.
